What is Evolution?
In the Creation Seminar, Dr. Kent Hovind explains in great detail how evolution is defined. He has done about 100 debates on the subject and says this is the best way to win the debate. Simply define what evolution is.
The word ‘evolution’ actually has six different meanings; only one of which is scientific. There is Cosmic Evolution, Chemical Evolution, Stellar and Planetary Evolution, Organic Evolution, Macro-Evolution, and finally Micro-Evolution.
Sceince is defined as what we can see, study, test, and demonstrate.
The first 5 meanings to the word ‘evolution’ are not scientific at all. As Kent Hoivnd explains, Cosmic Evolution (the origin of time, space, and matter) cannot be seen, tested or demonstrated. It is therefore not science. It is instead, simply a belief. There is no way anyone can know for a fact what occurred billions of years ago. There is just no way of observing such a thing.
It’s the same thing with Chemical Evolution, which is the origin of higher elements from hydrogen. The Big Bang was supposed to produce hydrogen, (according to the theory), and maybe some helium. This does not explain how we get all of the other elements in the periodic table.
The fusion in stars is sometimes used to explain this. However, you cannot fuse past Iron (Fe). Also this creates another problem. Which one came first? The stars or the elements? Because you have to have the stars to make the elements and also the elements to make the stars. Huge chicken and egg problem here.
Stellar and Planetary Evolution is the origin of the stars and the planets. It is a fact that no one has ever seen a star form. Scientists do not even know how stars form.
Then there is Organic Evolution. The origin of life. No one knows how life could get started from non-living material.
Macro-Evolution is the changing from one kind of animal into another kind of animal. This too, has never been observed. A dog is always going to produce another dog…not a different kind of animal. The dog, the wolf, the coyote, etc. all have a common ancestor. And they are still the same kind of animal. This is exactly what the bible says. Animals will bring forth after their kind…not species.
Finally we come to Micro-Evolution which means variations within the kinds. This is the only type of ‘evolution’ that has ever been observed. This is simply the variations that we see such as long or short haired, different color hair, different sizes etc.
In summary, the first five meanings of the word evolution are not scientific at all. As Kent Hovind likes to say, these views are simply religious views. You can believe in these different types of evolution, however they are not a part of science at all.
